I have a sweet and grubby unfinished antique sampler in my collection, stitched in 1881 by Jane Charter of Longstowe, England. After graphing her sampler, I created a “finished” adaptation as well as these little projects to go along with it. Jane lived what appears to be a typical life for her age and station, but a life marked by the loss of brother and father by the time she was 17. At age 19, she was living in the home of her new step-father and working as a Dressmaker in Cambridge. These little projects are what I imagine she might have made for her sewing kit, had she the time and materials, pulling from her original sampler the motifs she learned as a child.
