Zweigart Stramin Canvas 500 is a very open, light meshwork fabric which retains its rigidity thanks to its stiff finish. It gives large-area embroidery the stability it needs. It also makes it easier for beginners to learn decorative embroidery techniques.Canvas 500 is a double-thread canvas in white. It comes in eleven different fabric counts. Adjacent pairs of mesh threads result in a single stitch. The wide rage of counts mean that there is the right canvas for virtually any embroidery thread. This quality is the most widely used embroidery canvas.

Normally, this canvas is completely embroidered over in different techniques for pictures, cushions or similar. However, canvas 500 is also used as "waste canvas." This term is used because the individual threads of the canvas are given a special finish which dissolves in water. If the canvas is dampened with water, then the individual threads of the canvas will separate from one another and can be pulled out leaving only the embroidery. For that reason, the canvas can be used as an aid, especially when embroidering non-countable fabrics in cross-stitch.
