We survived Shenzhen

On Monday morning we rose early and headed down to the foyer to gather and wait for our cars to arrive. Right on time, the 2 cars turned up and all of us, accompanied by Nikki and one of her friends, piled in to head on our adventure into Shenzhen. The rain was threatening but fortunately held off until we were well on our way.

Arriving in Shenzhen in mid-morning, we checked into our hotel and went for a much needed coffee break in the pouring rain. Cheap umbrellas were purchased by all as we headed toward a very familiar Starbucks. It was following this caffeine-fix that we all ascended on the Lowhu Centre. For those in the group who had never before been to Shenzhen, the sight was overwhelming. Wherever you looked there were shops and more shops, all selling “genuine copies” of bags, jewellery, shoes, clothes, fabrics, DVDs, watches, phones and more.Over the next 2 days we became accustomed and oblivious to the “missy missy” calls from every which way.

Shopping for the rest of the day, we all met (some of us rain-drenched completely) in the evening and enjoyed a scrumptious meal of Peking Duck in the Laurel Restaurant. Some of the girls then enjoyed an evening massage and pedicure; others collapsed into bed completely exhausted from a day of frenzied bargaining.

After breakfast this morning we all returned fresh to the Lowhu Centre to finish off what was begun yesterday. With some items still unpurchased and shops still filled with goodies, the girls embarked on a second day of shopping. With the words “shop till you drop” echoing in all our ears we literally did that – stopping only at 5.30pm to return to the hotel in time to board the cars. Packed to the rafters, the cars returned 12 very weary ladies back to Hong Kong. With many bags, many more goodies and little or no money remaining, all of us survived Shenzhen! There is no doubt we have all contributed in a very positive way to the economy in China.

  1. Thanks so much for this great article;this is the words that keeps me going through the day. I have been searching around for this site after asked to visit them from a buddy and was thrilled when I found it after searching for awhile. Being a demanding blogger, I’m dazzled to see others taking initivative and contributing to the community. I just wanted to comment to show my appreciation for your work as it’s very energizing, and many bloggers do not get credit they deserve. I am sure I’ll visit again and will send some of my friends.
